Handcarts

I have developed an odd desire to race handcarts. I don't even know if that's what they're actually called but I mean those little platforms that travel on railroads by the handle being pushed up and down. I've never been on one and I've never actually even seen one in person but I really want to travel on one. I think it would be fabulous fun to race someone on a parallel track. Failing a parallel track and two carts I would simply like to use it as a traveling machine. Does anyone know where I can find a handcart with which to quench this strange obsession?

you girls are all weird. you do realize that with a handcart, you're completely confined to a straight line, right? No exploration, no connection to the earth...just up down, up down, up down. I guess it would be a good test of straight strength and stamina, but still....boooooorrrring.

My buddy mark and i drew up a few sketches of how we could build one to be used on the roads. It just got too complicated when it came to steering and it was all too much for our middle school minds to overcome.

Laura: If you want to see a hand car - there is one at the Alaska Museum of Transportation and Industry in Wasilla (which is actually a pretty cool little museum). If you want to drive one, you might contact Ernie Piper the General Manager of the Alaska Railroad. Ernie is a long time xc skier / ski racer and would likely be sympathetic to your dreams. ;-)
