Question

Because the collective wisdom among my readers is much greater than my individual wisdom I have a question for you.

Background: I am taking the ferry boat up to AK. It takes 5 full days. I want to ride my bike. I want to buy trainer/rollers to use on the boat (and after). I would rather own rollers.

Question: Is it possible to ride rollers on a ferry boat or is that an insane idea?

Also, to make up for asking and not giving in this blog I will remind you to check out Vordenburg's photos from the Bend training camp on TeamToday.

(and I'd like to point out that the photo of Kikkan skiing was taken on her COOLDOWN... not during one of the intervals)

It might be "possible" to ride rollers. The inside passage is relatively calm, but the boat does move in ways you don't typically experience while riding. Personally, I would only try a trainer.

Most of the trip to Juneau is protected water. The trip to Whittier is open water; here, the term rollers doesn't have anything to do with bicycles.

A safety-conscious crew might be more concerned with someone riding rollers than a trainer.

Depending on how crowded the ferry is, you might be able to set up on the aft deck. Maybe with weather protection. You'll be the topic of conversation. Post photos.

thanks for the insight and good point about the crew possibly not allowing it.

You can only go on the car deck when in port, so you'll have to carry your bike up when you get on. That said, you might convince the lovely, good-natured crew to make an exception for you.

Enjoy your 5 days in the bathtub.

when i was @ the mountain school in 2002, we all went on a 3-night, 4-day solo in the woods.

some did soul-searching. some wrote in journals. some just ate and slept.

my friend did 1000 push-ups in one day. in increments.

can you do 5000?

;)

Rj- Pete Vordenburg is the PRO caption writer... it was a topic of discussion at camp last week. I don't know about 5000 pushups. Maybe I will keep track of how many push-ups I do on the boat. Even better maybe I will find something to do pull-ups on! (and nice usage of "ze!")

I'd bet that you will find it next to impossible to do rollers on the ship. Of course you can take this as a challenge if you want!
